The National Consumer Commission has ordered an urgent recall of a specific batch of NAN Special Pro HA infant formula after safety concerns were identified that could place infants at risk. The announcement has triggered widespread concern among parents and caregivers who rely on the specialised formula for babies with heightened dietary needs.
The recall applies specifically to the 800g pack of NAN Special Pro HA Infant Formula intended for children aged zero to twelve months. The affected product carries the batch number 51660742F3 and was distributed through major retailers and suppliers from September 2025, reaching households across South Africa and neighbouring countries.
Toxin Risk Linked To Bacterial Contamination
The safety alert follows the possible detection of cereulide, a toxin associated with the bacterium Bacillus cereus. This toxin is known to pose serious food safety risks, particularly to infants whose immune systems are still developing and are more vulnerable to contamination.
The Commission warned that even limited exposure to such toxins can have harmful consequences for young children. While no confirmed cases of illness have been publicly reported, the potential presence alone was deemed sufficient to warrant immediate action to protect consumers.
Official Warning Issued To Parents And Caregivers
In its formal notice, the Commission stressed the seriousness of the recall and urged consumers to act without delay. Parents and caregivers were advised to stop using the affected formula immediately and to remove it from infant feeding routines.

Wide Distribution Raises Regional Concern
The recalled formula was not limited to South African shelves. According to the Commission, the product was also exported to Namibia and Eswatini, raising regional awareness concerns and prompting cross border consumer alerts.
This broad distribution footprint has intensified scrutiny on supply chain monitoring and quality assurance processes, especially for infant nutrition products where safety margins must remain exceptionally high.
Consumers Urged To Return Product Immediately
The Commission confirmed that consumers in possession of the affected formula are entitled to a full refund. Retailers have been instructed to accept returns regardless of whether the product has been opened, provided it matches the identified batch number.

Monitoring And Compliance Measures Underway
The Commission indicated that it will continue engaging with the supplier to ensure that corrective steps are taken and that food safety standards are upheld throughout the manufacturing and distribution process. The formula has a shelf life of approximately eighteen months, meaning some units may still be in circulation.
Authorities have emphasised that recalls of this nature are precautionary but necessary, reinforcing the importance of swift regulatory intervention when potential risks to infant health are identified. Parents are encouraged to remain vigilant and verify batch details on all infant nutrition products currently in use.
