Two people killed in Ensor Street shooting, police investigate

Two people were fatally shot in Ensor Street, Cafda, on the morning of Friday, 9 October 2026, around 09:30, according to Steenberg police. The victims, a male and a female, were found with gunshot wounds at a property where they rented separate accommodation. Medical personnel declared both deceased at the scene.

Steenberg police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed their arrival following reports of a shooting at the location. “Upon arrival at the scene, they found a male and female who had sustained gunshot wounds,” he said. “Both victims were declared deceased at the scene by medical personnel.”

The police are investigating two counts of murder, with no arrests made so far. Sergeant Twigg added, “The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation and no arrests have been made yet.”

Reports identify the victims as Eva Lakay and Nazeer Williams, though ages vary slightly between sources, with figures suggested at 45 and 31 or 46 and 30 years respectively. Conflicting details regarding exact ages persist as official confirmation is still pending from SAPS.

While some media accounts suggest the shooting could have been the result of a gang-related crossfire spilling over into the victims’ property, these claims remain unverified by police or multiple independent sources and are therefore treated with caution. The alleged intended target reportedly escaped unharmed.

This tragic incident highlights ongoing challenges with violent crime in the Cafda area. Steenberg police continue their investigation, appealing for any witnesses or community members with information to come forward.
