Three suspects arrested over 2020 murder of Limpopo police commander

The Limpopo Hawks arrested three suspects on the night of 9 October 2026 in the Nkoana area of Sekhukhune District, connecting them to the 2020 murder of Colonel Lebyane Jeffrey Seroka, former Groblersdal police station commander. Seroka was shot dead outside his home in Maganagobuswa Village in the Dennilton policing area on 17 October 2020, a killing that shocked the police community nationwide.

The suspects include two women, aged 51 and 41, and a 56-year-old man. They face multiple charges, including murder, conspiracy to commit murder, vehicle hijacking, robbery with aggravating circumstances, possession of an unlicensed firearm, and possession of ammunition, according to a Hawks statement reported by IOL. The suspects are expected to appear in the Moutse Magistrates’ Court on 12 October 2026.

Colonel Lebyane Jeffrey Seroka, aged 57 at the time of his death, was ambushed and shot outside his residence, with his motor vehicle stolen by the assailants. The vehicle was later recovered abandoned along the Dennilton-Maklerekeng road.

Major General Gopz Govender, Limpopo Hawks provincial head, emphasised the perseverance of investigators. “Six years may have passed, but justice has no expiry date,” he said during a briefing following the arrests. Govender further reassured the public: “Our investigation continues, and we will follow every credible lead to ensure that those implicated are brought before the courts to answer to the allegations against them.”

Hawks spokesperson Colonel Avele Fumba highlighted the continuous effort over the years: “Despite the passage of six years, investigators continued to pursue leads to establish the circumstances surrounding the killing and identify those allegedly responsible.”

The South African Police Union (SAPU) described Seroka’s murder as a painful loss for the police force and the country. “No stone must be left unturned in investigating the senseless murder of another committed and dedicated police officer,” SAPU said in a statement.

This arrest brings a measure of closure to a cold case that has left a lasting impact on the Limpopo policing community. Seroka’s killing remains one of several tragic losses of police officers in recent years, underscoring ongoing concerns about the safety of law enforcement personnel in South Africa.

While these arrests are significant, investigations are ongoing. Additional inquiries aim to uncover the full extent of the conspiracy and to secure further accountability. Cape Flats News will monitor developments, including the suspects’ court appearances and any fresh statements from law enforcement or community representatives.
