Three suspected robbers were killed on Thursday, 25 June 2026, following a high-speed chase and shootout with police on the N3 Buccleuch Interchange in Sandton. The incident occurred after a multidisciplinary team, including the Gauteng Tactical Response Team, intercepted a vehicle based on intelligence regarding a group suspected of involvement with the organised criminal group known as the “Rolex Gang”.
Investigation And Legal Response
Gauteng police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi confirmed that officers identified the suspects while they were travelling in three separate vehicles. Following a pursuit that led to a shootout at the interchange, one suspect was apprehended and currently faces a charge of conspiracy to commit robbery, with a court appearance pending.
Intelligence information was received about a group of men driving in three separate vehicles around malls, and they are suspected to be involved with the alleged Rolex Gang. The suspects were declared dead at the scene, and two pistols were found in their vehicle.
While the surviving suspect remains in custody to face the law, police confirmed that two pistols were recovered from the scene as part of the ongoing investigation. The site remains a focus for forensic teams tasked with piecing together the events of the high-speed pursuit.
Community Impact And Traffic Disruptions
The shootout led to the total closure of the N1 northbound link from the N3 north at the Buccleuch interchange, resulting in significant traffic congestion for commuters moving between Sandton, Woodmead, and Midrand. Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) spokesperson Xolani Fihla advised motorists to consider alternative routes while the crime scene was being processed.
We can confirm that we are aware of it, but it is an SAPS scene, so unfortunately, we don’t have much information regarding that. What we can confirm is that the N1 north link from the N3 north at the Buccleuch interchange is completely closed off due to that crime scene.
This incident underscores the ongoing challenge posed by organised syndicates in Gauteng, where groups often target individuals for luxury watches and high-value jewellery. Authorities are expected to provide further updates regarding the investigation and the suspect’s court appearance in the coming days.
