Wilderness Search and Rescue (WSAR) teams successfully rescued three hikers from Table Mountain on 23 June 2026 after they became trapped on the challenging Platteklip Gorge trail. The group, consisting of two international visitors and one local, were unable to proceed further due to a sudden change in weather conditions while navigating the popular route.
Rescue And Safety Operations
According to a WSAR spokesperson, the hikers were not prepared for the rapid shifts in weather that frequently impact the mountain. Upon receiving a distress call, rescue teams were immediately dispatched to provide assistance and ensure the safety of the stranded individuals.
Using a specialized rope system, the rescue teams reached the location and safely escorted the hikers down the mountain. No injuries were reported during the operation, which concluded successfully later that same afternoon.
Weather Risks And Preparedness
Table Mountain is a popular destination for hikers, yet its topography and climate can pose significant dangers even to those with prior experience. The area is known for rapid temperature drops and visibility changes, often catching unprepared visitors off guard.
The hikers, who were not prepared for the sudden change in weather conditions, requested assistance after becoming unable to proceed further.
Following the incident, the WSAR urged the public to exercise caution when planning outdoor excursions. A spokesperson emphasised: “We urge all hikers to check weather reports and ensure they have adequate gear before attempting any route on the mountain.”
