Table Mountain National Park Announces Ecological Burn Programme For 2026

Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) has confirmed plans for a series of ecological burns scheduled to take place between June and July 2026. These operations, part of the South African National Parks (SANParks) Integrated Fire Management Programme, are intended to maintain the ecological health of the Cape Floral Kingdom.

Objectives And Managed Areas

The controlled burns are essential for managing fire-dependent fynbos vegetation, which requires periodic fire cycles to remain vibrant and biodiverse. Furthermore, these burns assist managers in reducing the accumulation of flammable fuel loads and controlling the spread of invasive alien plant species across the park.

Identified sites for the planned activities include KJB Tip, Wilschutsbrand at Red Hill, Tokai Picnic Site, Tokai Manor House, and Middle Tokai Chrysalis. Additionally, burns are scheduled for Silvermine Tip, Newlands Tip, Orangekloof, and the Schotsekloof Tip Site.

Safety Protocols And Transparency

SANParks has emphasised that all operations remain subject to specific environmental variables to ensure the safety of surrounding communities and the environment. Officials confirmed that procedures will be strictly governed by meteorological data throughout the winter period.

Burns will only be conducted under suitable weather conditions, and all relevant stakeholders will be informed before operations commence.

The authorities are committed to maintaining transparency regarding these cycles, and public notifications will be issued prior to any ignition. Further updates on the exact timing of individual burns will be provided as weather patterns are monitored leading up to the winter months.
