A 23-year-old man was scheduled to appear in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, following his arrest in connection with the fatal shooting of two Anti-Gang Unit (AGU) officers and two civilians in Reiger Park.
The suspect faces two counts of murder and charges related to the possession of unlicensed firearms. Constables Thapelo Tlomatsana, 29, and Sphiwe Sibeko, 28, were killed on the evening of Friday, August 7, 2026, after responding to a scene where 36-year-old Roleen Lessing and 27-year-old Jaydin Magerman had already been fatally shot.
Investigation And Legal Proceedings
According to Hawks spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale, the breakthrough came after a multidisciplinary team tracked the suspect to the KwaDukathole Informal Settlement in Germiston. Two R5 rifles, confirmed as property of the South African Police Service (SAPS), were recovered during the operation on August 10.
“The co-ordinated effort resulted in the identification and arrest of the suspect who allegedly took part in the killing of two Gauteng SAPS Anti-Gang Unit members, Constables Tlomatsana and Sibeko, as well as two civilian women,” Mogale said.
The accused was out on bail at the time of the incident and reportedly faces several other pending charges, including two additional counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder. Acting National Head of SAPS, Lieutenant General Sphesihle Nkosi, stated that the recovery of the police-issued weapons highlighted the intensity of the pursuit.
“The arrest and recovery of the R5 demonstrate that SAPS will relentlessly pursue those who target police officers and communities,” Nkosi said.
Community And Operational Impact
The ambush in Reiger Park has sparked national concern regarding the safety of law enforcement officers operating in gang-ridden areas. The Hawks, alongside Crime Intelligence and tactical units, continue to investigate the broader circumstances surrounding the initial shooting of the two women that drew the officers to the scene.
