A 26-year-old primary school teacher from Stellenbosch is recovering after a harrowing ordeal in which she leapt from a moving Uber to escape what police are investigating as an attempted kidnapping.
Authorities confirmed that an official case had been opened following the incident on Thursday, 28 August 2025, at approximately 15:26 along Polkadraai Road, Kuils River.
Journey Takes a Sinister Turn
Denusha Nicholas, a teacher at Vlottenburg Primary, booked an Uber after school for her usual route home to Stellendale. However, she became alarmed when the driver diverted towards Eerste River, away from her intended destination.
“When I questioned the change in direction, he gave no explanation,” Nicholas recalled. “He adjusted the rearview mirror to watch me, which heightened my unease. I phoned my mother, shared my location, and told her something wasn’t right.”
Matters escalated when Nicholas informed the driver she planned to alter the drop-off point to Zevenwacht Mall.
“He claimed he didn’t understand English, locked the doors, and told me, ‘You’re going to see what’s going to happen,’” she said.
Decision to Escape
Feeling trapped and convinced the situation was turning dangerous, Nicholas made a split-second decision.
“I told myself I refused to become another tragic headline,” she said. “I prayed for courage… and I jumped.”
Two passing motorists stopped to assist her immediately after she hit the ground.
Investigation Underway
Uber has stated it is cooperating with law enforcement but has not confirmed whether the driver remains active on the platform.
Police spokesperson Wesley Twigg said the circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation, with no arrests made at this stage. Authorities have urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stop at 08600 10111 or use the MySAPS mobile application anonymously.
