Stellantis SA manufacturing plant remains under internal review

Stellantis’ proposed R3 billion vehicle manufacturing plant in the Coega Special Economic Zone, Eastern Cape, remains under internal review more than three years after the project was first announced. The multinational automaker has confirmed that while the project has not been cancelled, it continues to evaluate the viability of the facility amid shifting global and local market dynamics.

Strategic Investment Under Evaluation

The project, which was initially launched in December 2022 through a memorandum of understanding with the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition, was intended to bolster local production for both South African and international markets. A Stellantis representative recently stated that the company is currently reassessing various aspects of the manufacturing plans to ensure they align with the firm’s long-term strategy for the region.

Stellantis remains committed to South Africa. The project is currently under internal review to ensure it remains viable within the context of current global and local market dynamics.

A spokesperson for the company reiterated that while the investment project is moving forward, it remains in a state of flux as the automaker navigates current economic conditions. Specific details regarding exactly what aspects of the plant are being reviewed—such as the projected manufacturing scale or the specific vehicle product line—have not been disclosed to the public.

Broader Industry Challenges

The delay in construction highlights significant headwinds currently facing South Africa’s automotive sector, including challenges related to logistics infrastructure and energy supply reliability. This project serves as a key pillar for the country’s Automotive Production Development Programme (APDP), which is designed to incentivise local assembly and maintain South Africa’s status as a competitive manufacturing hub.

Market analysts note that global automotive trends, including the rapid transition toward electric and hybrid vehicle platforms, have forced many international manufacturers to adjust their regional expansion plans. The industry is now waiting for further guidance from Stellantis regarding a potential start date for the Coega site, which remains pending the conclusion of the internal review process.
