Sixteen people were killed and 20 others were hospitalised following a bus accident on the N1 near Touws River in the Western Cape during the early hours of Thursday, 2 July 2026. The vehicle, which was carrying approximately 78 passengers from Cape Town to Idutywa in the Eastern Cape, overturned after the driver allegedly attempted to avoid a delivery vehicle.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after the incident was reported to provide medical assistance to those involved. While 43 passengers declined medical treatment at the site, 20 individuals were transported to Worcester Hospital to receive care for their injuries.
It is alleged that the bus swerved to avoid colliding with a delivery vehicle when the driver lost control and the vehicle overturned.
The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has launched a formal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. Transport Minister Barbara Creecy and Deputy Minister Mkhuleko Hlengwa confirmed that the RTMC is tasked with producing a preliminary report within 48 hours to establish the exact chain of events.

The victims of the crash included seven adult males, five adult females, and three children, according to reports from police services at the scene.
