A long-distance bus travelling from Cape Town to Idutywa in the Eastern Cape crashed on the N1 highway near Touws River in the early hours of Thursday, 2 July 2026, leaving 16 people dead. The accident, which occurred at approximately 00:40, resulted in the deaths of seven men, five women, and three children, with a further 20 passengers hospitalised in Worcester with various injuries.

Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) spokesperson Simon Zwane stated that it is alleged the bus swerved to avoid a delivery vehicle, causing the driver to lose control and the vehicle to overturn.
