Seven people were killed and five others sustained injuries in two separate mass shootings in the Western Cape on the evening of 8 July 2026. The incidents, which occurred in Tafelsig and Philippi East, remain under police investigation with no arrests reported to date.
Investigation Into The Deadly Attacks
The first incident occurred at approximately 8:10 PM at the intersection of Laura Street and 8th Avenue in Lost City, Tafelsig, Mitchells Plain. According to Colonel Andrè Traut, victims were standing outside a local tuck shop when they were approached by armed suspects who opened fire on them, resulting in three deaths and two injuries.

A second incident took place shortly afterwards at approximately 8:30 PM at a residence in Marcus Garvey, Philippi East. This attack resulted in four fatalities and three injuries, bringing the total casualty count for the night to twelve people.
The motive for the shootings is yet to be determined and forms part of the police investigation.
Community Safety And Ongoing Concerns
The Western Cape continues to struggle with high levels of violent crime frequently linked to gang activity and organised crime syndicates operating across the Cape Flats. Public spaces and private homes in these regions have increasingly become targets for such attacks, raising concerns regarding the efficacy of current law enforcement deployments.
Police have not yet established a motive for either incident, though investigations are actively underway. Authorities are expected to provide further updates as forensic evidence is processed and witness statements are gathered.
