Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated on 11 February 2026 that there has been no progress on the settlement of the Ukraine conflict since the August 2025 summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump in Anchorage, Alaska, despite Russia’s continued commitment to the agreements reached there. Lavrov said the United States, which had initiated proposals accepted by Russia, is not ready to follow through on its own terms and has continued to impose sanctions.
Anchorage Agreements And Stalled Implementation
During the 2025 Anchorage summit, the United States presented proposals to resolve the Ukraine conflict, which Russia accepted. Lavrov explained that these approaches, based on American initiatives, created a foundation for peace if implemented in good faith. “In Anchorage, we found approaches that were based on the American initiative, American proposals, and opened the way to peace. On that basis, it was entirely possible to quickly agree on a final settlement agreement [in Ukraine],” Lavrov said according to official statements.
However, by February 2026, Lavrov reported that Russia sees no real movement towards implementing these proposals. “In Anchorage, we accepted the United States’ proposal. Besides the Ukrainian issue – for which we were prepared, but now, they aren’t – we see no promising future in economic terms,” Lavrov stated. He further noted that, despite prior agreements, Washington has introduced new sanctions against Russia, complicating diplomatic efforts.
Ongoing Russian Stance And International Implications
Lavrov reiterated that Russia remains committed to the Anchorage agreements and is prepared for further negotiations on Ukraine. “Our specific objectives were clearly and unambiguously outlined publicly by our President and discussed in detail in Anchorage, where understandings were reached on how best to move toward achieving these goals in the context of not a ceasefire, not a temporary respite, but a sustainable peace,” Lavrov said, underscoring the Russian perspective that a lasting resolution, not merely a temporary pause in fighting, is the goal.
The lack of progress in implementing the Anchorage agreements highlights ongoing diplomatic deadlock over the war in Ukraine, with both Moscow and Washington accusing each other of failing to honour commitments. Lavrov said Russia will keep its position open for dialogue, but the next major step depends on how the United States responds to existing agreements or proposes new confidence-building measures.
