Rising Star Vusi Moyo Named for Springbok Test Debut Against Wales

Twenty-year-old Sharks flyhalf Vusi Moyo is set to make his official Test debut for the Springboks against Wales at Kings Park in Durban this Saturday, 18 July 2026. The playmaker joins a refreshed match-day squad, marking one of four debutants selected by head coach Rassie Erasmus for the encounter.

Road To The Green And Gold

Moyo, who played a central role in the Junior Springboks’ 2025 Junior World Championship victory, has seen his career accelerate following a recovery from a five-month hip injury. He made his senior franchise debut for the Sharks in May 2026 before earning his first appearance for the national side in a non-capped exhibition match against the Barbarians on 20 June 2026.

It’s every kid’s dream to be part of this Springbok set-up.

Speaking on his selection, Moyo reflected on the emotional impact of receiving the news. “When the call came through on Monday, my heart missed a beat,” he stated.

Strategic Selection And Squad Depth

The inclusion of Moyo marks a significant step in coach Rassie Erasmus’s strategy to bolster squad depth ahead of the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia. Erasmus highlighted the young flyhalf’s physical profile, noting that his size and resilience make him a balanced prospect for the modern game.

Sometimes you get a really skilful flyhalf, sometimes you get a small, nippy flyhalf… I think Vusi, for his age, is a very big boy. He certainly doesn’t stand back from the physical side of the game.

Moyo has been named alongside other debutants Jaco Williams, Ruben van Heerden, and Carlu Sadie. The team will look to solidify their performance in the third match of the inaugural Nations Championship as selection continues to balance established World Cup winners with emerging talent.

Moyo is expected to take to the field at Kings Park on Saturday as he earns his first official international cap.
