Retreat Community Health Centre resumed operations on Monday morning following a temporary lockdown caused by a shooting incident on Sunday, 18 October 2026. The shooting occurred at about 15:30 on Bernstein Street in Cafda Village, Retreat, leaving four male victims, one of whom died at the scene.
Western Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg said, “Steenberg police responded to a complaint of a shooting on Sunday afternoon, 18 October 2026, at about 15:30, in Bernstein Street, Retreat. Upon arrival on the scene, they found four males who sustained gunshot wounds to their bodies.” A 41-year-old man was declared dead at the scene, while the other three victims, aged 16, 18, and 21, were taken to a medical facility for treatment.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation as Steenberg police are treating the matter as murder and attempted murder cases, Sgt Twigg added. No further details about the victims’ conditions or identities were disclosed.
Following the shooting, the Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness activated safety protocols and placed the health centre under lockdown, temporarily redirecting emergency care to other facilities. Monique Johnstone, spokesperson for the department, confirmed on Monday that the centre had safely reopened after a security assessment was conducted.
The Retreat facility’s reopening comes amid ongoing concerns about public safety in the area. Such violent incidents adjacent to healthcare centres interrupt critical services and raise fears for patients and staff alike, drawing attention to the need for increased security measures in vulnerable community spaces.
Residents and local community organisations have expressed frustration about the frequency of violent incidents near essential services. An unnamed resident said, “It’s scary when violence spills over right at the doorstep of places that should be safe, like the clinic. We need better protection here.”
Police and health authorities have not yet linked the shooting to any broader gang activity or precedent incidents in the area, and investigations continue. The exact motives and suspects remain unknown at this time.
Cape Flats News will follow up as more information becomes available, including updates on the investigation and any further safety measures introduced at the Retreat Community Health Centre.
