Approximately 43,000 social grant beneficiaries across the country remain at risk of payment interruptions after Postbank confirmed that expired SASSA Gold Cards will not be extended. Beneficiaries still in possession of these legacy cards must swap them for the new Postbank-issued version to maintain access to their funds.
Urgent Action Required For Card Replacement
The directive follows a final warning issued by Postbank on 1 August 2026, marking a hard deadline for the transition. The agency is moving to decommission the older payment infrastructure as part of a national effort to modernise security and streamline the delivery of social grants.
“Beneficiaries must replace their expired cards to ensure they continue to receive their social grants without any interruption,” stated a Postbank spokesperson during a briefing on the matter.
This transition is critical for the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) to ensure that grant funds reach the intended recipients directly and securely. Failure to switch to the updated card system may result in payment blocks as the legacy system supporting the old cards is phased out permanently.
