Gauteng police have opened an inquest docket after the body of an unidentified woman was discovered in the Moroka Dam, Soweto, on Sunday, 20 September 2026. The discovery was made at approximately 17:00 when the victim, estimated to be in her twenties, was found wrapped in a duvet.
While the investigation into the woman’s death is in its early stages, authorities have confirmed that they are treating the matter as a suspicious death. Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi addressed the discovery, stating:
The circumstances surrounding the incident are unknown at this stage.
This discovery has occurred during a period of heightened public concern across Gauteng, following the recovery of nine female bodies in the Ekurhuleni region since July 2026. Despite public speculation drawing parallels between the Soweto incident and the earlier cases in Ekurhuleni, police have emphasised that no official link has been established between the two.
Official reports indicate that the circumstances of this case differ from those in the Ekurhuleni investigations, leading officials to treat the Moroka Dam finding as a separate matter. Forensic teams are currently working to confirm the identity of the victim and establish the cause of death.
