Police Officer Testifies On Mother’s Demeanour In Jayden-Lee Meek Murder Trial

The murder trial of Kauthar Brown, who is accused of killing her two-year-old son Jayden-Lee Meek, is currently underway at the Western Cape High Court. During proceedings, Sergeant Adrian Kleynhans testified that the accused appeared unusually calm when he arrived at the scene where the toddler had been critically injured in 2023.

Official Testimony And Observations

Sergeant Kleynhans told the court that his initial assessment of the scene did not suggest the child had already succumbed to his injuries, primarily due to the mother’s detached behaviour. He noted that the accused displayed no signs of emotional distress or hysteria, which he considered inconsistent with the severity of the situation.

I didn’t think the child was dead at that moment. The mother was very calm. She wasn’t crying, she wasn’t hysterical, she was just standing there.

The officer further testified that upon closer inspection, the toddler’s condition was visibly dire. He observed that the child suffered from extensive physical trauma, noting that the victim’s face was swollen and his body showed signs of severe abuse.

The child had visible injuries on his body, his face was swollen, and he appeared to be in a very bad condition.

Background And Judicial Context

Jayden-Lee Meek was hospitalised with life-threatening injuries in 2023 and was declared dead approximately two weeks later. Kauthar Brown and her co-accused face a range of serious charges, including murder, child abuse, and assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The case has mobilised significant public concern regarding the protection of children and the efficacy of social services in the Western Cape. This trial represents part of a heightened focus by the National Prosecuting Authority on violent crime against minors, aimed at securing convictions in cases of domestic abuse. The court will continue to hear evidence as the state presents its case against the accused.
