Pieter Coetzé Strikes Gold With Record-Breaking 50m Backstroke in Glasgow

South African swimmer Pieter Coetzé claimed the men’s 50m backstroke gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on 25 July 2026. Coetzé secured the top spot on the podium with a new Commonwealth Games record time of 24.18 seconds.

Record Success For Team South Africa

The gold-medal performance follows Coetzé contributing to a bronze medal finish in the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay alongside his teammates on 24 July. During that event, veteran swimmer Chad le Clos reached a significant milestone by becoming the most decorated male athlete in the history of the Commonwealth Games with 19 career medals.

I am super happy with it. It is a good way to start off.

Speaking after his victory, Coetzé reflected on the personal challenges he faced in the lead-up to the competition. He stated, “This is an amazing feeling… I have had to overcome challenges in training for these Games and have been through quite a tough time, so I didn’t know what was going to happen, and the way it’s worked out means a lot to me.”

Growing Momentum In The Pool

Team South Africa’s campaign in Glasgow has been marked by strong performances across various disciplines, including Paralympic success. Nathan Hendricks secured the nation’s first swimming gold of the Games in the men’s S13 100m freestyle event, while Erin Gallagher added to the medal tally with a silver in the women’s 50m butterfly.

The collective achievements of the squad underscore the continued development of South African swimming on the international stage. Expectations remain high for the remaining days of the competition as athletes prepare for their final heats.
