One fatality after Durban shack fire destroys 60 dwellings

One person has died and approximately 60 dwellings were destroyed following a fire at the Malacca Road Informal Settlement in Durban during the early hours of Saturday, 4 July 2026. Emergency services were alerted to the blaze at approximately 4:00 AM, initiating a large-scale response to contain the fire as it spread rapidly through the densely packed structure of the settlement.

Investigation And Official Response

Authorities have confirmed that one individual, identified as Ntuli, perished in the incident. The Department of Human Settlements is currently working alongside local community leaders to locate the next of kin for the deceased.

Working with local community leaders and neighbours, we are searching for the relatives of the deceased who is known as Ntuli.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire. Speaking on the urgency of the response, Human Settlements spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya noted that emergency teams prioritised the prevention of further loss of life during the operation.

Settlement Vulnerability And Safety Hazards

The fire at Malacca Road underscores the persistent risks facing informal settlements throughout South Africa, where high-density living and a lack of formal fire-resistant infrastructure frequently lead to devastating outcomes. Similar incidents have been recorded in the area previously, including a fatal blaze in March 2023 that highlighted these ongoing structural challenges.

Fire hazards in such communities are often compounded by the necessity for residents to rely on illegal electrical connections for heat and lighting, particularly during the winter months. Municipal authorities are expected to provide further updates on relief efforts for the displaced residents in the coming days.
