The North West Department of Health has welcomed R3.9 million in National Lotteries Commission funding for a rural clinic in Mahikeng, according to an SABC News report published on 12 September 2026.
The report says the funding follows earlier NLC support for a private clinic in Dihatswane village.
CapeFlats.co.za has not yet independently verified the funding amount or the department’s formal response.
We are checking directly with the North West Department of Health and the National Lotteries Commission and will update this story.
SABC News did not include a statement from the department or the NLC in its report.
The Mahikeng clinic and Dihatswane village project details remain unclear.
Rural healthcare in the North West has faced severe infrastructure and staffing shortages.
Deputy Minister Phaahla highlighted these challenges during an oversight visit in 2025, and a Kabe village clinic project remains stalled.
The provincial health department has been expanding facilities, with the Jouberton Community Health Centre and Freedom Park clinic becoming operational in recent years.
Private investment is also growing, with the planned Taolelo Tawana Memorial Hospital in Madibe Makgabane aiming to bring services closer to underserved communities.
The National Lotteries Commission is a public entity that raises funds for community projects, including healthcare.
If confirmed, the R3.9 million would be a significant boost for primary care access in the Mahikeng area.
CapeFlats.co.za will seek comment from North West Health MEC Madoda Sambatha and the NLC.
We will provide an update by 14:00 on Monday, 15 September, or sooner if information becomes available.
