Approximately 100 municipal workers blocked Cuyler Street in Kariega on Wednesday, 5 August 2026, and Thursday, 6 August 2026, using burning tyres, rocks, and rubble to protest against unsafe working conditions. The industrial action, led by the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU), targeted the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s depots in Cuyler and Despatch.
Management Admits To Infrastructure Failure
During the blockade, Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Chief Operating Officer William Obeng met with the protesting staff and acknowledged that the administration had fallen short in its responsibilities.

Despite this admission, workers voiced deep frustration with the disparity between their working environment and the protection afforded to management.

Recurring Labour Tensions In The Sector
SAMWU Regional Secretary Siphokazi Lobishe explained that the protest was the final resort after repeated requests for basic facilities and security upgrades were met with delays.
We closed the road, because that is the only language they understand. If you write to them to request a meeting, they postpone it… and we are back to square one.
The depots currently lack essential infrastructure, including proper fencing, lighting, toilets, and change rooms. These security deficits have resulted in the loss of municipal assets, including the theft of a municipal truck. This incident marks the second major protest in 2026 regarding these conditions, following a similar blockade in January, with staff noting that previously established anti-vandalism committees have failed to function effectively.
