A permanent monument dedicated to slain whistleblower Babita Deokaran is scheduled to be unveiled on 9 August 2026 at the Shri Mariammen Temple in Mount Edgecombe. The memorial serves as a public tribute to the senior Gauteng Department of Health official, who was assassinated on 23 August 2021 after exposing systemic corruption involving R100 million in irregular contracts at Tembisa Hospital.
Community Dedication And Justice
The monument project is a joint initiative organised by the Mount Edgecombe Arts and Cultural Council, the Deokaran family, and the Shri Mariammen Temple Society. Speaking on the choice of date, Council Treasurer Venashree Naidu stated: “We want to bring Babita back home to Mount Edgecombe, and we felt it very fitting to have it on Women’s Day.”
Naidu further noted that the initiative aims to keep the focus on the pursuit of accountability for the crime. “The family is excited and I’m happy that we have actually chosen to have her monument erected at our heritage site and to honour her, to also create awareness around justice for Babita Deokaran,” she said.
Legacy Of A High-Profile Whistleblower
Deokaran’s death in a targeted shooting outside her Johannesburg home highlighted the severe risks faced by individuals who challenge graft within the South African public sector. While six men were sentenced to a combined 95 years in prison for their roles in her murder in August 2023, the masterminds behind the assassination have yet to be identified or brought to trial.
The upcoming unveiling is expected to serve as both a site for community remembrance and a persistent call for authorities to uncover the full scope of the conspiracy that cost Deokaran her life. Further updates regarding the unveiling ceremony are expected as the date approaches.
