A 39-year-old man was shot dead in Schoeman Street, Cafda, Retreat, on Saturday 29 August 2026 at approximately 17:40, Western Cape police spokesperson Constable Ndakhe Gwala confirmed. The victim sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the face and neck and was declared dead at the scene by medical personnel.
“The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation and no arrest has been effected at this stage,” Constable Gwala said in a statement reported by the Cape Argus and IOL on 31 August 2026. Steenberg SAPS is handling the investigation.
Steenberg Community Policing Forum chairperson Nicola Small confirmed she knew the identity of the victim and described him as a “prominent figure” in a gang. “Unfortunately I don’t have much information other than who the victim was — I can confirm that he was a ‘prominent figure’ in a gang, that’s all I have at the moment,” Small said.
Both the Cape Argus and the Daily Voice reported on 31 August 2026 that the deceased was allegedly linked to the Flakka Kids gang, also known as the Flakkas, though SAPS has not confirmed this claim. Residents in Cafda told both publications they feared possible retaliation following the shooting.
Cafda, a subsection of Retreat on the Cape Flats, falls under the Steenberg SAPS precinct, which covers several communities including Retreat, Lavender Hill, and Steenberg. The area has experienced periodic gang-related violence, with multiple rival groups historically operating in the vicinity.
The Steenberg CPF has previously raised concerns about shootings and drug-related crime in its policing precinct, where gang tensions have periodically escalated into violent confrontations. Community policing structures in the area have repeatedly called for increased police visibility and faster response times to incidents.
Cape Flats News journalists were not on the scene at the time of the shooting, and the identity of the deceased has not been officially released by SAPS. The motive for the killing remains unknown, and no suspects have been identified publicly.
