Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has spoken openly about the emotional challenges his squad faced during their pre-season preparations following the death of midfielder Jayden Adams on 11 July 2026. The club was forced to delay their scheduled European training camp to allow players and staff to attend the memorial service, ultimately requesting a postponement of their opening Betway Premiership fixture against Marumo Gallants to accommodate the team’s recovery.
Emotional Recovery And Collective Healing
Addressing the period of uncertainty, Cardoso explained that the decision to travel abroad eventually served as a vital tool for the players to process their grief together. He noted that the environment allowed the team to distance themselves from the immediate intensity of their usual surroundings while continuing necessary physical training.
Well, I think it was, first of all, a very important turnover in terms of emotions. We had to interrupt the pre-season, unfortunately, by the disappearing of Jayden. We went to the memorial. We were not in the best place, let’s say, emotionally. So, coming out from the country and escaping a little bit from the context was very important.
The squad remained in Europe throughout late July, with the coaching staff prioritising team cohesion alongside their technical objectives. Cardoso emphasised that maintaining a supportive atmosphere during this period was crucial to the team’s ability to move forward as a unit.
I think, indeed, that is the first very positive aspect that we have to highlight, keep the team together as much as we still had to deal with the funeral. It was very important that we could go through this emotional collective moment together.
Contextual Impact On Season Preparation
The tragedy significantly altered the club’s build-up to the 2026/2027 season, which includes rigorous commitments such as the upcoming FIFA Intercontinental Cup. By rearranging their schedule, including the conclusion of their tour with a 7-0 friendly victory against Al Sailiya on 31 July, the club sought to balance mental well-being with the professional demands of the sport.
The administrative decision to postpone the opening league match provided the necessary space for the club to reconcile the loss before entering the competitive season. The team is expected to continue its preparations as they integrate their emotional recovery into their broader strategic focus for the year ahead.
