KwaZulu-Natal police arrested a man on Saturday, 10 October 2026, after he allegedly threatened to shut down Moses Mabhida Stadium ahead of the MTN8 Cup final between Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns.
The suspect was found at King Dinizulu Park in Durban, where he had gathered a group of people intending to stage a march to disrupt the final. When police intervened, those with him fled the scene, leaving the man in custody.
Colonel Robert Netshiunda, spokesperson for KwaZulu-Natal police, confirmed the arrest and noted that the group accompanying the suspect dispersed quickly. “Those who were with him managed to run away,” he said.
Police have been clear that any attempts to disrupt the event or cause instability would not be tolerated. A statement from the KwaZulu-Natal police emphasised, “Anybody who attempts to stage any kind of protest on the routes leading to the stadium, or anywhere in the vicinity of Moses Mabhida Stadium will be met with the strong arm of the law.” All roads leading to the stadium remained open throughout the day.
This arrest came amid heightened protest-related unrest in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng regions, where authorities reported multiple arrests and damage to vehicles and property linked to wider demonstrations. The police linked this incident to the broader context of public violence and resistance during the same period.
Despite the arrest, details such as the full identity of the suspect, the exact charges filed, and whether he has made a court appearance have not been disclosed. No SAPS release provided further identifying information, and no reporter or stringer was confirmed to have been on the scene during the arrest.
The South African Police Service reiterated the message that anyone threatening public order or safety would be dealt with according to the law, reinforcing their commitment to maintaining peace during major events.
It remains unclear what legal proceedings will follow for the arrested man. Cape Flats News will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates when more information becomes available.
