A 40-year-old Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officer, Amukelani Musengi, remains in custody following her arrest for the alleged murder of a colleague in Soweto. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Sunday, 28 June 2026, in Glenridge Extension 16, has prompted an official investigation by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).

Preliminary reports into the shooting suggest that Musengi was involved in a domestic dispute with her girlfriend earlier that evening. It is alleged that she contacted a colleague to assist in transporting the partner away from the property when the fatal confrontation occurred.
As they were driving away from the event, Musengi, who was off duty, fired several shots with her service firearm towards the departing car, fatally wounding her fellow JMPD colleague.
The suspect appeared in the Protea Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 6 July 2026, to face charges related to the shooting. The matter has been postponed to 8 July 2026 to allow for the verification of the accused’s residential address.
