Advocate Andrea Johnson, the head of the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC), has been issued a new subpoena to testify before the Madlanga Commission following her failure to appear on 13 July 2026. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has confirmed that Johnson returned to her duties on 17 July 2026 after a period of absence attributed to medical reasons.
Legal And Official Response
Johnson’s legal representative, Advocate Apla Bodlani, initially informed the commission that his client could not attend due to serious, undisclosed health issues. Commission spokesperson Jeremy Michaels, however, stated that there is no current indication of illness, noting that the commission requires Johnson’s testimony to address a range of pressing matters.
The commission chairperson previously dismissed the medical certificate provided by Johnson’s legal team, describing it as lacking sufficient clarity. A new subpoena has now been served to ensure her appearance during the upcoming week to address the formal inquiry.
Allegations And Commission Mandate
The Madlanga Commission was established to probe systemic corruption, criminal infiltration, and political interference within the South African criminal justice sector. Central to the inquiry involving Johnson are allegations from Hawks and Crime Intelligence witnesses claiming she interfered in an investigation concerning suspended Crime Intelligence head Major-General Feroz Khan.
The specific accusation centres on claims that in 2018, Johnson leaked a criminal docket related to an assault and intimidation case to Major-General Khan before he was formally charged. These proceedings are viewed as critical for the public perception and integrity of the newly formed IDAC as it attempts to combat high-level state capture.
