Grassy Park Police Seize Illegal Firearms in Parkwood

Grassy Park police arrested three suspects in Parkwood on Youth Day, 16 June 2026, following the recovery of two illegal 9mm pistols and ammunition. The firearms were confiscated during an intelligence-driven operation at a residence identified by authorities as a suspected gang safe house.

Community Collaboration In Crime Prevention

The arrests were made possible after local residents provided information to the police regarding suspicious activity in the area. SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg emphasised the importance of these public contributions in maintaining safety across the Cape Flats.

The suspects were apprehended following a tip-off from the community, which remains our most valuable asset in the fight against crime.

The operation forms part of a broader, intensified effort by the South African Police Service to suppress gang-related violence. Increased visibility and targeted raids are standard measures employed by police in the Western Cape during public holidays to mitigate potential spikes in criminal activity.

Context Of Safety Challenges

Parkwood has historically grappled with the proliferation of illegal firearms and the influence of local gang structures. These developments reflect ongoing efforts by law enforcement to dismantle illicit networks that contribute to the insecurity of communities within the Grassy Park policing precinct.

The three suspects remain in police custody as investigations continue into their potential connection to broader gang activities. Further court appearances are expected to follow as the National Prosecuting Authority prepares to formalise charges.
