Google has officially launched its first cloud region in Johannesburg, marking a significant entry for the technology giant into the African cloud infrastructure market. The Johannesburg facility provides local enterprises, startups, and public sector organisations with high-performance, low-latency access to Google Cloud services.

The new cloud region is a central component of Google’s $1 billion commitment to Africa’s digital transformation, an initiative first announced in 2021. This investment also encompasses the Equiano subsea cable, which has significantly increased internet capacity along the continent’s western coast.

Speaking at the launch, Niral Patel, Director of Google Cloud Africa, noted that the infrastructure is designed to bridge the digital divide by improving reliability for cloud-based services. Alistair Mokoena, Country Director for Google South Africa, added that the investment will enable local businesses and developers to build, test, and deploy applications more effectively.

The establishment of this hub positions South Africa as a critical technology centre, intensifying competition with established cloud providers such as Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services (AWS).
