Placement offers for Gauteng’s Grade 1 and Grade 8 learners will start going out via SMS on 15 October 2026, after a pressure-cooker application window that drew 805,688 submissions for limited spots, the provincial education department confirmed.
Gauteng Education MEC Lebogang Maile said on 6 September that the department could not place every applicant at the same time because available places were finite. The online admissions system had opened on 5 September.
The department would not be able to place all applicants simultaneously because available places were finite,” Maile said during a media briefing in Johannesburg, according to a statement obtained by Cape Flats News.
If none of the schools a parent selected can accommodate the learner, the child will be offered a seat at the next closest school with space available, departmental guidelines state. Placement criteria rank applicants by home address within the feeder zone, proximity to the school, having a sibling already enrolled, and the parent’s work address within the feeder zone.
Parents have seven days to accept an offer once received. If the offer is declined, an objection can be lodged within seven days. The system deadline for outstanding documents was noon on 11 September.
For families on the Cape Flats tracking the admissions crisis up north, the numbers show a system groaning under enrolment pressure even as Western Cape schools brace for their own mid-year intake demands. Cape Flats News verified the application figure and placement timeline against a Gauteng Department of Education release and an EWN report, both independently confirmed.
Louise Schoonwinkel, Chief Commercial Officer at Optimi, which owns the Impaq home-education brand, said the scramble reshapes household planning far beyond the school gate. “For parents, a school placement is never simply an administrative outcome. It determines daily routines, transport arrangements, household costs and, most importantly, whether a child can begin the year settled and ready to learn,” Schoonwinkel said.
Schoonwinkel added that many families are now registering with alternative providers months earlier than in previous cycles. “Peace of mind comes from knowing that your child has a structured curriculum, appropriate academic support and a clear path through each grade,” she said.
Impaq offers CAPS-aligned home and online schooling from Grade R to Grade 12. The company reports a spike in enquiries from Gauteng parents unwilling to wait until January to know where their children will be taught.
Three claims in IOL’s partnered content could not be confirmed independently: that 210,000 applications were submitted within four hours on 5 August 2026; that more than 10,000 Gauteng Grade 1 and Grade 8 learners were still unplaced in December 2025; and that learner enrolment in Gauteng rose by more than 23,000 over the past year. Cape Flats News is checking these with the Gauteng education department.
What remains unknown is how many of the 805,688 applicants will receive offers in the first round on 15 October. This journalist will check back with the department’s spokesperson on 16 October for updated placement figures and any late-document disputes logged during the objection window.
