Gauteng Education MEC Maile to Visit Soweto School Amid Sexual Assault Allegations

Gauteng Education MEC Lebogang Maile is set to visit Busisiwe Primary School in Zola, Soweto, on 20 October 2026, following allegations that a teacher raped a nine-year-old learner. The Gauteng Department of Education has dispatched officials to investigate the claims, while a case has been opened by Jabulani police station.

According to the Gauteng Department of Education, “MEC Maile will ascertain the circumstances surrounding this incident of alleged sexual misconduct, which has since been reported to the relevant law enforcement authorities.” The department said it would await a detailed report before deciding on further steps, with Maile expected to outline interventions during her visit.

Parents and community members protested outside Busisiwe Primary School demanding urgent action, including the immediate removal of the teacher accused in the case. The family of the alleged victim confirmed that the child had stopped attending school after the incident.

The aunt of the learner told The Sowetan, “She didn’t want to go to school. That’s when she explained that a day before she requested to go to the toilet during a class and the teacher followed her and, upon arrival at school toilets, raped her.” This remains an allegation under investigation.

Jabulani police commander Brigadier Lefa Tsotetsi confirmed the case was opened but emphasised that communication should only be with the complainant, stating, “The law also says we should only communicate with the complainant; the complainant will be the one who chooses to speak to you.”

This investigation follows heightened scrutiny of sexual misconduct cases in Gauteng schools, including an earlier probe in August at Curtis Nkondo School of Specialisation in Emdeni, Soweto.

Lebogang Maile emphasised the sensitivity of the matter during a briefing: “I will be receiving that report tonight, after which we will make a determination. This is a sensitive matter, and it has to be dealt with the sensitivity that it deserves, and we are definitely on the side of the learner or the victim, because we can’t take this matter for granted.”

Details on the accused teacher’s status and the ongoing police investigation remain undisclosed, and no disciplinary or legal outcomes have been announced while the case continues.

Cape Flats.co.za will continue to monitor this story for developments as the department’s report is received and any further actions are taken.
