Four Palestinians and Two Israelis Killed in West Bank Confrontation

A confrontation between armed Israeli settlers and residents of the Palestinian village of Tell, near Nablus, resulted in the deaths of six people, including four Palestinians and two Israelis, on 24 July 2026. The two Israeli nationals were confirmed to be Benayahu Mellet, a civil defence squad member, and Maj. Yuval Ezra, an Israel Defence Forces (IDF) commander.

Investigation Into The Fatal Clashes

While the Israeli military initially categorised the settlers involved as hikers, officials later acknowledged that the group was armed and that an exchange of fire occurred before troops arrived on the scene. The exact sequence of the engagement, including who initiated the gunfire, remains a point of dispute between local Palestinian accounts and the official version provided by the Israeli military.

The settlers were not following a route or trail, as they claim. They intended to attack the homes.

Walid Zidan, the head of the Tell village council, stated that the group’s presence in the village was intended to be an offensive action rather than a leisure activity. Following the incident, the military conducted mass raids on 25 July in the surrounding area, detaining over 70 Palestinian residents for interrogation.

Escalating Violence And Regional Impact

In the days following the incident, reports surfaced of retaliatory violence as settler groups targeted mosques and residential properties in Qusra, Kur, and Beit Furik. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has pledged to implement what he described as “powerful action” in response to the event, proposing the demolition of homes belonging to the families of Palestinians involved and an acceleration of new settlement construction.

The Israeli government didn’t prevent the settler attacks on Tal village, so now it needs to stop settler reprisals and escalating military action that will make a bad situation worse.

Sarah Sanbar, acting Israel and Palestine researcher at Human Rights Watch, noted the growing systemic concerns regarding state-backed violence and impunity in the region. The security situation across the West Bank is expected to remain highly volatile as authorities monitor for further reprisal attacks and potential military escalation.
