Four men were killed and another was left critically injured following a mass shooting in the Lotus River area of Grassy Park on the night of Thursday, 18 June 2026. The victims, aged between 32 and 44, were gathered outside a residential block of flats at the corner of Nita and Olga streets when unknown individuals in a vehicle opened fire on the group.
Investigation And Official Response
The South African Police Service (SAPS) Anti-Gang Unit has taken over the investigation into the attack, though police confirmed on Friday that no arrests have been made. SAPS spokesperson Novela Potelwa stated that murder and attempted murder dockets have been opened, with preliminary findings pointing towards a gang-related motive.
“Grassy Park police have opened murder and attempted murder dockets for investigation. Preliminary investigations indicate the motive for the shooting incident is gang-related. Anti-Gang Unit detectives are hard at work in search of the perpetrators, with no arrests effected yet,” said Potelwa.
Community Safety And Political Reaction
The incident is part of a spike in violent crime across the Western Cape, which included a shooting in Manenberg on Wednesday, 17 June 2026, that left one person dead and six others wounded. Anroux Marais, the Provincial MEC for Police Oversight and Community Safety, has stated that these recurring acts of violence suggest current policing strategies are insufficient to tackle the entrenched nature of regional gang activity.
“The persistent shooting necessitates extraordinary measures… [it is time] to urgently review and strengthen their strategy to disarm criminal gangs and disrupt (their activities),” said Marais during a media briefing.
Authorities expect further updates on the investigation as detectives continue to canvass the Lotus River area for evidence and potential witnesses.
