Speaking at a media briefing, Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Jackie Macie, expressed grave concern over the rising frequency of accidents on this specific stretch of road. He identified the R23 as a “death trap” and emphasised the urgent need for enhanced law enforcement on the route to prevent further loss of life.

This tragedy follows a similar incident in April 2026, when four women were killed in a head-on collision between a truck and a sedan on the section of the R23 between Volksrust and Perdekop. The repeated nature of these accidents has elevated public safety concerns regarding traffic management and infrastructure in the region.
Addressing the broader issue of road conduct, MEC Macie stated that motorists must also play their part by driving safely and obeying the rules of the road. Provincial authorities are expected to provide further updates as the investigation into Monday’s collision progresses.
