Five Additional SAPS Officers Suspended Amid Medicare 24 Tender Probe Linked to ‘Cat’ Matlala

Five additional senior officers from the South African Police Service (SAPS) have been suspended in connection with the ongoing investigation into the controversial Medicare 24 tender, bringing the total number of suspended officials to 14. This decision follows the awarding of a contract valued at approximately R228 million to Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala’s company in 2024 for medical services to SAPS personnel.

Background of the Investigation

The Medicare 24 contract was intended to facilitate medical screenings, wellness checks, illness assessments, pre-employment medical examinations, and injury-on-duty assessments over three years. The Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) has raised serious allegations concerning irregularities in the tender process, including a notably shortened advertising period and the selection of a company that did not meet the required procurement standards.

Details of Suspensions and Arrests

The allegations surrounding the Medicare 24 tender have already led to the arrest of Matlala, along with 12 senior police officers, a company director, and representatives from two companies on charges related to fraud, corruption, and money laundering. Among the most recent suspensions are Lieutenant Generals Molefe Fani and Lineo Nkhuoa, as confirmed by SAPS.

“Internal departmental processes are currently underway, and in the interest of preserving the integrity of these processes, the SAPS will not provide further comment at this stage,” stated Brigadier Athlenda Mathe.

“The affected members have been placed on suspension pending the finalisation of disciplinary and related investigations,” added Mathe.
