A fifth suspect has been arrested in connection with the December 2023 assassination of uMngeni Municipality DA councillor Nhlalayenza Ndlovu. The 44-year-old suspect was apprehended in the Mpophomeni area on Saturday, 15 August 2026, and is scheduled to appear in the Howick Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 17 August.
Councillor Ndlovu was gunned down at his home in Mpophomeni on 5 December 2023 in front of his wife and children. The arrest was confirmed following investigations by the KwaZulu-Natal Political Killings Task Team (PKTT), which has been pursuing the case since the murder occurred.
Regarding the latest breakthrough, uMngeni Mayor Chris Pappas stated: “Of course, when there are new developments in this case that lead to arrests and us getting closer to justice, we are pleased by this. We are still concerned that the police are not being completely transparent and they are not completely cooperative with the family, however we do hope and we do pray that we are getting close to the finalization of this case.”
The PKTT has identified Inkosi Simphiwe Zuma of the Nxamalala Traditional Authority in Impendle as the alleged mastermind behind the operation. Unverified claims reported by IOL suggest that the suspect arrested on Saturday is a close family member of Inkosi Zuma, though this remains to be confirmed by an official SAPS release.
Two other suspects previously arrested in connection with the killing have already entered guilty pleas. A police spokesperson noted: “The PKTT’s message is clear: political killings will not be tolerated and those who order, finance, facilitate or execute these murders will be pursued relentlessly and brought to justice.”
Political violence remains a persistent issue in KwaZulu-Natal, with local government officials frequently targeted in power struggles. The outcome of this case is viewed as a significant test for the PKTT and the provincial justice system.
Plea proceedings for two other accused individuals are expected to be finalised in the Pietermaritzburg Regional Court on 21 August 2026.
