A 37-year-old father, Jeneul Absolom, was shot and killed during a violent incident in Avila Street, Wesbank, at approximately 18:45 on Saturday, 15 August 2026. The shooting also left three other individuals—two women aged 43 and 50, and a 60-year-old man—with gunshot wounds.
Provincial police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirmed that members of the Mfuleni SAPS were patrolling the area when they heard gunshots and responded to the scene. Mfuleni police have since registered a case of murder and three counts of attempted murder, with the motive for the attack currently being investigated as gang-related.
Absolom, affectionately known to his community as “Nielas,” was remembered by his family as a man who brought warmth to those around him. Speaking on the loss, his brother shared, “The best way to describe my brother is a people’s person. Whenever we had family gatherings, he was always the entertainment, making jokes and being friendly.”
This incident marks another violent chapter for Wesbank, a community that has endured several mass shootings throughout 2026. Data from the area shows a persistent pattern of instability, including an attack in nearby Godetia Street on 12 July 2026 that resulted in two deaths and seven injuries.
The Western Cape has struggled with a rise in gang-related violence, placing significant pressure on local police resources. Investigators are now working to piece together the sequence of events that led to the shooting on Avila Street, near the Wesbank Main Road.
