Patrick Mphindeli Mkhwanazi, 39, and William Mbuyiswa, 29, have been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Sebokeng Regional Court for the murder of three people in Evaton. The pair were also handed a 15-year jail term for the attempted murder of a fourth victim during the violent attack on 22 February 2023.

The convictions follow a trial in which the accused pleaded not guilty to all charges brought against them. State prosecutor Vusi Mbabane presented evidence confirming that the perpetrators confronted the victims over claims that they had stolen drugs and a firearm belonging to Mkhwanazi.
On arrival, they found four men; they then had an altercation with them, accusing the four men of stealing Mkhwanazi’s drugs and firearms.
Speaking on behalf of the National Prosecuting Authority, regional spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana confirmed that police arrests were made at the scene following reports from neighbours who heard the commotion. The sentencing marks the conclusion of a lengthy legal process that has held the Sedibeng community in a state of unease.
