Eskom Removes Over 1 Million Customers From Load Reduction Schedules

Eskom has successfully removed more than 1.1 million customers from its load reduction schedules, marking a significant milestone in the state-owned power utility’s ongoing initiative to stabilise local electricity distribution networks. The programme has seen 545 individual network feeders removed from restrictive scheduling after infrastructure investments and community interventions were implemented to curb illegal connections and overloading.

Progress In Network Stabilisation

Five of South Africa’s nine provinces are now entirely free of load reduction, specifically the Western Cape, Northern Cape, Free State, North West, and Mpumalanga. Eskom expects to build on this momentum, having established a target to eliminate load reduction across seven provinces by October 2026, with the goal of full national eradication by March 2027.

Reaching the milestone of more than one million customers removed from load reduction demonstrates that the programme is delivering tangible results. However, the work is not complete.

The sentiment was echoed by Junaid Munshi, Eskom Group Executive for Distribution, during a recent briefing on the utility’s progress. These localised network management measures remain distinct from national load shedding, representing a further sign of recovery as South Africa continues to record more than 413 consecutive days without system-wide power cuts.

Addressing Infrastructure And Demand

Load reduction is primarily utilised in areas where electricity theft, meter tampering, and rapid, unauthorised demand growth cause severe local infrastructure strain. The current eradication strategy focuses heavily on the deployment of smart metering technology alongside infrastructure upgrades designed to manage capacity safely.

Eskom continues to coordinate with municipal and community stakeholders to formalise connections and protect electrical equipment from recurring failure. Authorities are expected to announce additional updates on the rollout of smart meter installations in high-load areas throughout the next quarter.
