Durban residents and commuters have been warned of significant traffic disruptions in the city centre as the 46th SADC Summit kicks off at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre (ICC). The summit, which brings together regional leaders, runs from 16 to 17 August 2026, forcing the implementation of multiple road closures to accommodate high-level security protocols.
Walnut Road, situated between Bram Fischer Road and Dr AB Xuma Road, has remained closed to all traffic since 27 July and is scheduled to reopen only on 18 August. Further temporary “hard closures” are in effect across various intersections on 16 and 17 August to facilitate the movement of Heads of State and international delegations.
“The Durban Metro Police Service advises all road users and motorists to avoid this route and make use of alternative roads to prevent traffic delays and congestion,” said Colonel Boysie Zungu, spokesperson for the Durban Metro Police Service. Authorities have confirmed a high police presence throughout the CBD to manage the flow of traffic and ensure the safety of both local residents and visiting dignitaries.
The scheduling of the summit coincides with a major sporting event, as football fans are expected to head to the nearby Kings Park Stadium for the fixture between Chippa United and Orlando Pirates. Traffic officials have urged supporters to depart for the stadium significantly earlier than usual to account for the restricted access around the beachfront and ICC precinct.
While primary access routes to the Durban ICC will be severely restricted, municipal officials have stated that local traffic management plans remain fluid to adjust to the shifting security requirements of the summit. The event marks the first time since the summit began that such extensive closures have been required in the immediate vicinity of the central business district.
At the time of writing, it is not yet confirmed which additional feeder roads may be closed on short notice should security requirements escalate during the Heads of State proceedings.
