Department of Social Development seeks family of abandoned Sea Point toddler

The Western Cape Department of Social Development (DSD) has launched an urgent search for the family of a young girl who was found abandoned in Sea Point. Estimated to be approximately two years old, the child is currently receiving temporary care and protection from the department following the incident.

Official Investigation And Appeal

The DSD is working to establish the circumstances surrounding how the child came to be left alone. A department representative speaking in a statement on 17 June 2026 urged members of the public to assist in the identification process to facilitate the child’s reunification with her relatives.

The Department is appealing to anyone with information or family members to come forward to assist in reuniting the child with her family.

Broader Implications For Child Wellbeing

Child abandonment remains a persistent social issue within the Western Cape, often emerging as a result of severe socioeconomic pressures, fragmented support networks, or domestic crises. Under the Children’s Act, the DSD is mandated to prioritise the safety of such minors, providing immediate intervention while legal investigations are conducted to ensure the long-term wellbeing of the child.

Authorities expect to provide further updates as the investigation progresses and potential family members are identified.
