Carlos Queiroz has officially concluded his tenure as head coach of the Ghana national team following the side’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The veteran manager stepped down on 5 July 2026, just days after Ghana suffered a 1-0 defeat to Colombia in the round of 32.
Tenure And Tournament Performance
Queiroz was appointed on 13 April 2026 on an initial four-month contract, succeeding Otto Addo with the primary objective of navigating the Black Stars through the global tournament. During the group stages, the team successfully progressed from Group L—which included England, Croatia, and Panama—by qualifying as one of the best third-placed teams.
However, the exit against Colombia triggered a clause in his contract that required a quarter-final finish for an automatic extension. Speaking on his departure, the former Real Madrid manager expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to have led the national squad.

Future Outlook For The Black Stars
Reflecting on his short 11-week stint, Queiroz emphasised the necessity of looking beyond the pitch to ensure long-term sustainability for Ghanaian football. He argued that structural and environmental improvements are essential for the nation to compete consistently at the highest level of international football.
“The future of the Black Stars will not be built only on the pitch,” Queiroz stated. “Black Stars success must start off the field, by creating the best possible environment to prepare, protect and develop Ghana’s extraordinary football talent.”
The Ghana Football Association is expected to begin a search for a permanent successor in the coming weeks as the team transitions into a new rebuilding phase.
