Caoimhin Agyarko Suffers First Professional Defeat to Josh Kelly in Jeddah

Caoimhin Agyarko sustained the first professional defeat of his 19-fight career on 25 July 2026, dropping a unanimous decision to IBF super-welterweight champion Josh Kelly in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The judges scored the title bout 115-112, 115-112, and 114-113 in favour of the defending champion after a gruelling contest at the Jeddah Superdome.

Investigation And Fighter Reaction

The fight was characterised by its physical intensity, with referee Ignatius Missailidis deducting a point from Josh Kelly in the sixth round for repeated rabbit punches. Despite the loss, Agyarko expressed respect for his opponent’s performance during post-fight interviews.

It’s not the result I wanted, but well done to Josh – he’s a great champion, very tricky and awkward. I did think I won but it wasn’t good enough for the judges and I have no complaints.

Agyarko noted that his preparation involved feedback from his team regarding his growth within the division. He added: “Adam said to me they underestimated me and I have levels to go through, but it wasn’t good enough, ultimately.”

Context Of The Title Bout

The clash, which served as part of the undercard for the Anthony Joshua event, saw both competitors navigating a tactical and physically demanding match. Josh Kelly, who finished the fight with a cut face and nose, acknowledged the difficulty of the challenge posed by his challenger.

That was a messy, hard fight… I knew he was going to be very tricky. He had a good gameplan, tried to make it a good boxing match and fight in spurts.

Agyarko demonstrated increased momentum in the latter stages of the fight, but could not overcome the initial lead built by Kelly. Both fighters are expected to consult with their management teams in the coming weeks to determine their next steps in the super-welterweight division.
