The Top Employers Institute has recognized 136 companies in South Africa as ‘Top Employers’ for 2024, with 20 distinguished as leading the pack. Vodacom has been named the best employer in the country this year.

Vodacom’s achievement marks a significant milestone, as it has been listed as a Top Employer for seven consecutive years (2017-2023). However, this is the first time the telecommunications giant has clinched the top spot for both Africa and South Africa.

Ranked second in South Africa is the Indian multinational tech group, HCL Technologies, which operates locally from Sandton. This group is noted for its focus on enterprise and business technologies.

Unilever, a household name known for brands such as OMO, Sunlight, and Dove, secured the third position. Mondelez International, another major player known for products like Cadbury, Oreo, and Royal, followed in fourth place.

Daimler Truck Southern Africa, a major distributor of brands like Mercedes Benz and FUSO, rounded out the top five.

Beyond the top five, several other well-known South African companies featured in the top 20. These include Santam, the country’s largest short-term insurer, which has been recognized for the eighth consecutive year, climbing to the eighth position from tenth in 2023. Sanlam and Tiger Brands also made notable appearances.

The Top Employers Institute describes its certification programme as a means for organisations to assess and enhance their workplace environment, “recognising excellence in [employer] people practices.” The programme has certified over 2,300 organisations across 121 countries, affecting approximately 12 million employees.

To qualify as a certified top employer, organisations must employ over 250 people and undergo a rigorous evaluation of their policies. This process ensures that workplace conditions meet or exceed industry best practices. The evaluation covers 20 topics, including people strategy, work environment, talent acquisition, learning, diversity, inclusion, and well-being.

The process includes:

Validating the provided answers and supplemental proof; – Reviewing the consolidated results; – Conducting an independent external audit of the certification process; – Objective scoring based on the final results.
