A 40-year-old Belhar mother of two, Kumsa Papu, was stabbed to death at a residence in Wild Plum Street, Mandalay, in the early hours of Sunday, 20 September 2026. Police were called to the scene at approximately 01:30 following reports of a violent altercation at the property.
Western Cape police spokesperson Wesley Twigg confirmed that officers discovered the victim with multiple stab wounds upon their arrival. A 44-year-old male suspect was arrested in connection with the murder and is currently in police custody.
According to family members who spoke to the media on 21 September, the incident involved a harrowing standoff. They alleged that the suspect locked the victim in a bedroom and attempted to set a piece of furniture on fire before police managed to intervene.

Nondumiso Papu, the aunt of the deceased, added that witnesses at the scene reported the suspect’s threatening behaviour toward law enforcement.
We were also told by the people who were with them in the house that he at one point tried to set a couch on fire. He [allegedly] told police that they would all die if they forced the door open.
The murder has intensified community concerns regarding the prevalence of gender-based violence in the Western Cape.
