Gyökeres

Sporting Clube de Portugal have reportedly made overtures to Manchester United over a possible transfer for Viktor Gyökeres, with Arsenal’s interest appearing to have cooled in recent days. The development marks a significant twist in what had seemed a straightforward transfer to North London, only for prolonged negotiations and disagreement over conditional payments to create a potential opening for rivals.

The Swedish international has been one of the standout performers in European football, catching the attention of several elite clubs. Arsenal initially seemed to be in pole position, with reputable journalist David Ornstein reporting that the Premier League side had already settled on the framework of a deal more than a week ago.

“Sporting confirm a deal in principle is in place, with an agreement of a €63.5million fixed upfront fee plus €10m in add-ons, while the striker’s agent has waived his fee to help facilitate the deal.”

However, despite an outline being agreed, sources indicate that the agreement remains incomplete. The two clubs are reportedly at an impasse over the structure of the performance-based bonuses, with Sporting CP insisting on an easily attainable €10 million in add-ons, while Arsenal seek a split arrangement—€3 million in simpler bonuses and a further €7 million tied to more complex performance targets.

Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano offered insight into the ongoing dialogue, suggesting that negotiations are far from over, despite optimism in North London.

“On Viktor Gyokeres, I can tell you that the conversations are continuing in London. The agent is working on the deal. Arsenal remain confident but still have to negotiate add-ons. They want €3m in bonuses plus €7m more complicated. Sporting want €10m very easily. Any moment could be good for this deal.”

This delay has reportedly prompted Sporting CP to reach out to Manchester United, who are believed to be monitoring the situation closely. According to reports circulating in Portugal and the United Kingdom, United are now “positioning themselves to overtake the Londoners and sign” the 26-year-old striker should talks with Arsenal fully collapse.

Yet, the primary hurdle for Manchester United may not be financial. Sources familiar with the player’s thinking suggest that Gyökeres remains firmly committed to joining Arsenal and is not currently entertaining alternative destinations.

“Biggest problem” facing the Red Devils’ chances of a deal is that the Sweden international “only wants” a transfer to Arsenal this summer.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, speaking from Singapore during the club’s pre-season tour, alluded to the club’s need to strengthen its squad and confirmed that the transfer window remains an active consideration.

“There’s still a long time in the window and we are seeking still. In terms of numbers, we are short and we have to improve the depth and the quality of the squad – and we are constantly looking in the market. Until that happens, again, focus on the players that we actually have, work with them, and I’m very pleased with what I have seen so far in the first 10 to 15 days.”

Arteta further highlighted the impact that new signings can bring, referencing the fresh energy that recent arrivals have introduced to the dressing room.

“It’s like shaking the tree again – bringing new faces, they bring new excitement, new energy as well. We signed very important players as well, and, again, I think everybody feels that the heights have to go to a different level and it’s what we are seeking.”

Despite Arteta’s insistence that Arsenal remain proactive in the transfer market, some reports indicate that the Gunners “have been silent for a week” with respect to their dealings over Gyökeres. That perceived silence has prompted speculation over whether the North London club are re-evaluating their position or simply playing hardball in pursuit of more favourable terms.

As things stand, Viktor Gyökeres remains a Sporting player. But with both Arsenal and Manchester United lurking, the coming days could prove pivotal. Whether the player’s own preference for Arsenal will hold firm, or whether Sporting’s push for alternate suitors tips the balance, remains to be seen.
