Advanced Radiotherapy Technique Shortens Prostate Cancer Treatment To Five Sessions

A new radiotherapy technique known as Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT) is being rolled out for suitable prostate cancer patients, significantly reducing the standard course of treatment from 20 sessions to five. This advancement employs highly precise, focused radiation beams to deliver higher doses directly to the tumour while sparing surrounding healthy tissue.

Clinical Efficiency And Patient Impact

The transition to this shortened treatment timeline represents a significant shift toward ‘hypofractionation,’ a method that delivers more concentrated radiation in fewer fractions. By consolidating the treatment, the protocol aims to decrease the time patients spend in hospital facilities, thereby reducing the logistical burden of multi-week therapy schedules.

This is a huge step forward for men with prostate cancer, meaning they can spend less time in hospital and more time with their families.

Speaking on the impact of the rollout, Amanda Pritchard, Chief Executive of NHS England, highlighted the benefits for patients. A clinical oncology representative added that reducing the number of visits not only improves the patient experience but also increases the overall capacity of radiotherapy units to treat a greater number of individuals.
