Gauteng Police Confirm 20 Arrests for Election-Related Incidents

In Gauteng, South Africa, the recent democratic elections saw 20 individuals arrested for election-related incidents, as confirmed by Provincial Police Commissioner Tommy Nthombeni. The arrests were due to various disruptions at polling stations, both inside and outside the premises. These incidents included unruly behaviour, such as taking prohibited photographs of ballots and physical altercations among voters in line.

Commissioner Nthombeni emphasized that while ensuring safety and order was challenging, the police were prepared to handle such disruptions. Measures were in place to address and mitigate disturbances effectively, restoring calm at the polling stations. The rise in reported cases highlights the security challenges faced during the electoral process, primarily stemming from voter intolerance and subsequent conflicts. Despite these issues, the police managed to maintain order and ensure the safety of the voting public.
