In a harrowing sequence of events over the weekend in Delft, a police sergeant and several individuals fell victim to a violent hijacking incident. The sergeant, a Delft-based officer, lost his life in what began as an ordinary day turned tragic at a local car wash in the N2 Gateway area.
While taking a moment at a shebeen, the officer faced the ultimate peril when hijackers targeted his vehicle, a VW Jetta, sparking a deadly confrontation. The confrontation not only claimed his life but also left a trail of violence stretching to Delft South, affecting multiple families and shaking the community to its core.
A community watch member, who preferred to remain anonymous, recounted the chilling details.
“The police officer, a Delft officer, was shot dead and three others were wounded at the corner of Sapela Road and Sandalwood Street in N2 Gateway Delft,”
they disclosed. The attempted hijacking quickly spiraled out of control, with the assailants unleashing violence in their wake.
The officer, eagerly awaiting the return of his freshly cleaned metallic light blue VW Jetta, unknowingly walked into a deadly trap. The hijackers’ demand for the vehicle keys led them to the shebeen, igniting an argument that would end in tragedy.
“Both officers were shot several times by the hijackers trying to get away. They then shot three other guys,”
the neighborhood watch member further explained, outlining the indiscriminate violence that ensued.
The attackers’ rampage continued onto Palm Street, where they brutally shot a couple, leaving one dead and the other injured. The male victim, recently released on bail for a murder charge, succumbed to his injuries, while his girlfriend survived the attack and was urgently hospitalized.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg provided an official statement on the incident.
“Kindly be advised that this office can confirm that Delft police registered murder and attempted murder cases for investigation, however, the investigation was taken by the DPCI (Hawks).
